Each year I split my time between my property in Mexico City and my property in San Francisco, my home town. I love enjoying both of these cultures of course, and through the years I have learned how to combine the best of Mexico, with the home comforts that I have become accustomed to in the United States. One of the biggest challenges that I faced when I got settled in to my new place in Mexico, was how to watch US television. I am somewhat of a technophobe but thankfully my buddy Stephen Buzzi is not, and he helped me get hooked up.
Netflix was the one that I couldn’t work out for a long time, and now that I know, I wanted to share with you how to get Netflix when you are abroad.
What’s The Issue?
The issue is not that you cannot watch Netflix from abroad, the service is available in over 190 countries after all, the issue is that they differ a lot. Thanks to licensing laws in different countries, Netflix cannot show the full range of programs and movies in Finland say, as it can in the United States. Equally, Netflix do like to tailor their library, to fit in with the country, Spanish-speaking movies here in Mexico for example. And so the question is not how to access Netflix, but how to access Netflix in your home country.
Getting Around It
When you use the internet, you do so using an IP address, this is what tells the internet where you are, and what alerts Netflix to your location so that you can access local Netflix. The key then, is to alter your IP address so that it appears as though you are in the US. In order to do this, we need something called a VPN or virtual private network. To get a VPN, you will need to select a VPN provider and then pay a small amount each month to access their servers. The process of this is that you connect to the internet using on of the servers that exists around the world, in this case, the USA. Once you connect to a US server, and then sign into your Netflix account, your IP address will appear as though you are in the US, and you will get access to all of the movies and programs that you are used to.
What to Look For
There are many VPN providers out there, with some offering a better service than others. The only suggestion that I would make is that you select a VPN which offers you a very fast speed as streaming Netflix will require a high speed connection. VPNs are very easy to set up and use, but just in case you should also look for a VPN which has a good customer service record.
Don’t do without your favorite TV show just because you’re abroad, get a VPN and watch away.
